Weather & Farming Strategy — When to Plant, When to Wait

Weather events appear randomly and each lasts 5 minutes. Learn which weather to plant in, which mutations to chase, and how to react when Starfall or Thunderstorm shows up.

WeatherStarfallThunderstormStrategyTiming

The 5-minute weather cycle is the backbone of efficient farming in Garden Horizons. Understanding which weather to plant in, which mutations to chase, and when to hold versus harvest separates casual farmers from Shilling-maximising experts. This guide covers everything you need to know.

The 5-Minute Weather Cycle

Garden Horizons runs on a repeating weather cycle. Each weather event lasts approximately 5 minutes before transitioning to the next event. The sequence is not fixed — weather events appear in a semi-random rotation — but some events (Starfall, Thunderstorm) are significantly rarer than others (Rain, Fog, Snow).

Your planting timing must be aligned with the weather cycle. A plant receives mutations based on the weather active when it is planted. If you plant during Sunny weather, you get no mutation. If you plant during Starfall, you get Starstruck.

⚠️ You cannot add mutations retroactively

If a plant is already in the ground when a weather event begins, it does NOT receive that event's mutation. You must plant seeds at the start of (or during) the weather event to receive the associated mutation.

Weather Events & Their Mutations

WeatherMutation(s)MultiplierPriority
☀️ SunnyNone⬇️ Low — plant basics only
🌧️ RainFlooded (1.75×) or Soaked (1.25×)up to 1.75×🟡 Medium — reliable boost
🌫️ FogFoggy (1.25×)1.25×🟡 Low–Medium
🌊 TsunamiTidal (2×)🟡 Medium — decent mutation
❄️ SnowSnowy (2×) or Chilled (1.5×)up to 2×🟢 Good — plant premium crops
🌪️ SandstormSandy (2.5×)2.5×🟢 Good — decent with +20% growth
⛈️ ThunderstormShocked (4.5×)4.5×🔴 High priority — rare!
🌠 StarfallStarstruck (6.5×)6.5×🔴 Very high — very rare!
🕳️ Black HoleNova (TBA) + Galactic (TBA)TBA⏳ Unreleased — not yet in game
☄️ Meteor ShowerMeteoric (10×)10×🔴 Maximum priority — best event!
🍀 Lucky Block Seed RainNone (drops free seeds)🟢 Collect seeds — Cabbage at ~1%

⚠️ Mutation exclusion rules

Some mutations cannot coexist on the same crop: Flooded + Soaked ❌ (Rain gives one or the other, not both), Snowy + Chilled ❌ (Snow gives one or the other, not both). Shocked + Starstruck ✅ can stack — they come from different weather types (Thunderstorm vs Starfall).

When to Plant — Weather Decision Guide

Sunny — Plant Basics or Skip

No mutations. Plant cheap, fast crops to keep your plot active and income flowing. Don't waste premium seeds like Beetroot on Sunny weather. Use this time to prepare for the next weather event.

Rain — Reliable Mid-Tier Planting

Rain gives Flooded (1.75×) or Soaked (1.25×) — one per crop, not both (exclusion rule). Plant your best available crop. Onion and Beetroot are excellent Rain plants — even a 1.75× mutation boosts income meaningfully, and Rain is common.

Snow — Solid Regular Event

Snow gives Snowy (2×) or Chilled (1.5×) — one per crop, not both (exclusion rule). Snow is more common than Starfall and Thunderstorm, making it a consistent source of decent mutations for regular farmers.

Thunderstorm — Drop Everything and Plant

Shocked (4.5×) is a top-tier mutation. When Thunderstorm begins, immediately plant your most valuable seeds. Have Beetroot seeds in your inventory ready to deploy at any moment during a session. The +50% growth speed bonus is a nice extra.

Starfall — Very High Priority

Starstruck (6.5×) is the second-highest single-event mutation after Meteoric (10×). Starfall is rare. When it occurs, plant your highest-value seeds without hesitation. Beetroot during Starfall is the gold standard for most players.

Meteor Shower — Maximum Priority Event

Meteoric (10×) is the highest single mutation multiplier in the game. When Meteor Shower begins, drop everything and plant your absolute best seeds. This is the ultimate event in Garden Horizons.

Black Hole — Unreleased

Black Hole is an unreleased admin-only weather event found in the game code. It is expected to apply both Nova and Galactic mutations simultaneously, but exact multipliers and mechanics have not been officially confirmed yet. Stay tuned for future Admin Abuse events.

Session Timing Strategy

The most efficient farmers structure their sessions around the weather cycle:

1

Join and check the current weather

Before planting anything, see what weather is active. If it's Starfall or Thunderstorm, immediately plant your best seeds.
2

Keep premium seeds in inventory at all times

You have ~5 minutes per weather event. If you need to go buy seeds when Starfall starts, you'll miss the window. Always keep Beetroot (or your best crop) seeds on hand.
3

Track the cycle

After 2–3 sessions, you'll get a feel for the weather rotation in your server. Some servers have more frequent rare events than others — find a good server and stick with it.
4

Harvest at the end of a session

Don't harvest mid-session unless you need emergency Shillings. Plan to harvest all ready plants at the end, then reinvest into the next planting cycle.
5

Stay for rare events — they change everything

If you see a Thunderstorm, extend your session by 5–10 minutes — Meteor Shower or Starfall might follow. Note: Shocked and Starstruck can stack on the same crop — getting both is 4.5+6.5+1−2 = 10× mutation multiplier, ×3 Lush = 30× total value.

💡 Combine strategies for maximum output

The best farmers don't just target one weather event. They plant during every mutation event that occurs in a session, layering multiple mutation plants simultaneously. Use the Favoriting Tool to track which plants have which mutations so you know what to harvest first.

Offline Safety

Since v1.2.0, plants grow AND ripen offline — but mutations are still triggered by weather events that happen while you are online. Your plants remain safely on your plot while you are offline. There is no risk of losing plants — they simply continue growing and ripening until you return.
